It is a period piece, so it is really kind of funny to read it as knitting history. That being said, it is confusing to my modern mind. I think if I had more experience knitting, it might not be so confusing, but I don't even know what half the stuff she has patterns for is! I'm glad I downloaded it.

My Knitting Book Frances Lambert 9781141204670 Books Reviews

Doesn't cover any new ground, and I am not fond of the way it is presented/organized. That may be because I bought the digital version, but I don't think so. It might be great for beginners to encourage creativity.
After ordering the above, realized it is not the type of book one should refer to in the form of an ebook.
It would have been far better for me to order it an have a hard copy nearby. However, as I have several
reference books in the needle art skills, it is not my intention to do so. Thanks anyway. Ruthette B. Crane
No pictures or even line drawings, which was to be expected, but the writing styles of more than a hundred years ago, particularly in knitting, is very different compared to today's patterns. If you are an experienced knitter, want to do the research to understand the terminology, then you MIGHT find this useful and fun to explore. A lot of the patterns are for garments that no one even wears any more but the stitch patterns might be transferable to something else you want to make, provided you understand and can get through the language barrier.

Since I downloaded it for free and have given it a good looking over I doubt I want to struggle trying any of the patterns for all the above reasons. I have tons of patterns with current day language I can test myself with without having to do an Internet search to figure out. There are plenty of free patterns on the Internet also so unless you are interested in historical knitting, the terminology, patterns for odd ball garments and just love a mystery then don't bother. But, it's FREE so why not download and take a look but don't expect to see anything but words that make your eyes roll back in your head!
This book is not a novel. It is a treasure of knitting patterns and advise from the early 1800's by one of the leading ladies of this craft. None of the questions about the book even apply to this reference book.
This book was written in 1843 and deals with the knitting of the time. It is fun to try the patterns which are written in the British English with some undefinable terms. But I am going to enjoy learning what others in past times have knitted.
This book was published in London in 1843 by one "Miss Lambert." I haven't made any of the patterns, but they are intriguing. Be aware that there are NO PICTURES. The book's antique language (the ads are a hoot) is a lot of the charm. There are instructions for "pearling" and "d'oyleys" I'm not sure how practical it is, but it's a lot of fun, and I like to think of the Victorian ladies sitting by the fire, working up "d'oyles and tidies...shawls, counterpanes, bags and many other articles." I am going to try my hand at "Gentleman's Muffatees" for my next project.
This book is available in the public domain with some sketches of the finished work. They are not necessary for completion of the project however do help in evaluating the project before you go through the time and materials to attempt knitting the project in the blind. . Fashions have changed somewhat in the past hundred years. An avid knitter will try it anyway or enjoy reading the patters to pick up some new old stitches.
It is a period piece, so it is really kind of funny to read it as knitting history. That being said, it is confusing to my modern mind. I think if I had more experience knitting, it might not be so confusing, but I don't even know what half the stuff she has patterns for is! I'm glad I downloaded it.
